Keeper of the Sacred Shawl
A Haunting Tale of Divine Remembrance and Feminine Power
Over four centuries ago, in the heart of Tenochtitlan, a goddess was born—La Divina, the sacred feminine made flesh. But her story was twisted by fear and grief, and she became known as La Llorona, the Weeping Woman of Mexico. Her lament still echoes through generations, a song of love, loss, and redemption.
In 1984, amid the Guatemalan genocide, Luz, a gifted curandera, is imprisoned for praying for the desaparecidos—the disappeared ones. Her faith and her love for Rosario become her salvation. Together, they flee to San Francisco, carrying the unseen blessings of La Divina and the weight of unhealed sorrow.
There they meet Aurora Camacho, a painter haunted by a ghostly child and fragments of a past she cannot bear to remember. As the veil between worlds begins to thin, Aurora is drawn into a red brick room—where the lost and forgotten cry out to be remembered. When a weeping woman begins calling her name, reality fractures. Is Aurora losing her mind—or is she being called to awaken?
As ancient and modern stories entwine, Luz, Rosario, and Aurora must face the divine feminine’s most profound mystery: that the deepest darkness and healing light both come from the threads of the sacred shawl.
Keeper of the Sacred Shawl is a lyrical, time-bending tale of memory, healing, and ancestral truth, weaving together generations of women who must remember who they are—and what was never truly lost.
What People Are Saying
“This deeply touching story describes a sad little girl in the red brick room who appears to Aurora in visions, weeping and calling to her for help. Aurora’s past beautifully symbolizes the state of unresolved emotional trauma that those who suffer from childhood sexual abuse so often carry. The author handles this challenging and painful subject in an extremely sensitive way. She skillfully weaves the haunting mythological figure of the Goddess La Llorona between historical details describing the horror of genocide in Guatemala and the contemporary characters whose lives have been so deeply affected by trauma. Mari Dreamwalker writes from the vantage point of a wise curandera (Medicine woman) with a deep sense of compassion, forgiveness, and love, making Keeper of the Sacred Shawl a truly exceptional creative masterpiece. I am so grateful to this unique author for having had the courage to write this story.”
—Sarah Alissandra Nomngoma, Author of The Fisherman’s Child, Co-author of Magdalene Unveiled
“In this beautiful book, La Llorona is reimagined back to her roots, rescued from the twisted legends of spooky ghosts and restored to her rightful place as La Divina, a pre-Hispanic Goddess of healing. With this redemption, the main characters of this engaging story are able to discover their own path through trauma and tragedy back to wholeness. Mari Dreamwalker offers her readers the same promise of piecing broken parts of the soul back together as she weaves ancestral healing techniques, indigenous wisdom, and ancient teachings through every scene, making the fabric of the sacred shawl into a vibrant tale of hope, faith, and forgiveness.”
—Emily K. Grieves, Visionary Artist
“Mari Dreamwalker has indeed found a way to walk us into dreams. This intriguing, enveloping book will stay with me for a very long time.”
Luis Alberto Urrea, Author of The Hummingbird’s Daughter, The Devil’s Highway, and Goodnight Irene
“Keeper of the Sacred Shawl not only recounts the ancient cautionary tale of the risks of misbehavior told to Mexican children for generations, but it also narrates women’s continuous struggle for validation and honor. The book’s mythical scenes shift to modern-day conflicts between the traditional Catholic hierarchy and a humanitarian priest in San Francisco who works to aid migrants seeking help. La Llorona follows because she lives timelessly in the consciousness of those who attempt to awaken and evolve. We are also witness to the difficult relationship between a guilty mother and a haunted daughter who, with much perseverance, finally transcend the effects of generational abuse through La Llorona’s healing. Mari Dreamwalker’s impressive knowledge of traditional mystical arts and rituals educates and fascinates. Her willingness to share comes through in her honest portrayal of people searching for the truth. Her tales are relevant whether narrated through the mystery of immortal spirit or the practical struggles of contemporary life. I value the feminine power to be gained from Keeper of the Sacred Shawl and encourage other seekers to read Mari Dreamwalker’s book.”
